SAHUARITA--The
Town Council Monday heard complaints from the builders' lobby that
the town has failed to explain the need for a proposed 50 percent
increase in the new construction sales tax.
The council delayed consideration of the tax because Vice Mayor
Marty Moreno and council member Lynne Skelton were absent. The
council briefly debated conflict of interest issues before cutting
short the meeting because of a lack of air conditioning in the
Sahuarita School Auditorium.
Objections
raised
Builders and developers had objected before the meeting to the
inclusion on the agenda of a proposed ordinance that would raise the
tax to 4.5 percent from the current 3 percent on Oct. 1.
The council may resume consideration on raising the tax and other
agenda items at the regularly-scheduled July 28 meeting or it may
schedule another meeting, Mayor Richard Grabowski said afterward.
Agenda items that were skipped include a discussion on donating town
money to private entities, such as service organizations; providing
laptops and cell phones to council members to use while out of town,
and a study session on the process of how developments are approved.
